Sustainability
Built for the future, the new Central Library will serve the needs of today and demonstrate Calgary Public Library’s responsibility to our natural resources and the environment.

As a sustainable building, it will be designed to achieve LEED Gold rating, in accordance with The City of Calgary’s Sustainable Building Vision and Policy. It will use ENMAX District Energy as the most efficient, green energy solution, and will be carefully designed to reduce our impact on the environment while providing users and employees with a comfortable, healthy place to work.

Founded on the principle of reuse and with a strong legacy of stewardship, Calgary Public Library has already demonstrated leadership in environmental resource management. It is the only library system in Canada with two LEED certified facilities:

  • Crowfoot Library, the first Calgary building to be LEED certified
  • Country Hills Library at Cardel Place, the first Alberta building to achieve LEED Gold rating

In addition, the Library is planning a LEED renovation of Signal Hills Library and the development of three new LEED community branches.
