“Calgary’s new Central Library will set a standard for 21st century public libraries, creating a destination and community place for information, learning and culture."
A Great City Needs a Great LibraryAround the world cities are building new, inspiring downtown public libraries. Civic leaders are recognizing that an investment in a landmark library is an investment in the future. Other cities have shown that powerful new-experience libraries anchor the economic, cultural and social vitality of the city.
The Calgary Public Library Board is proud to lead in creating the kind of library Calgarians have told us they want and need. With the support of The City of Calgary, and in honour of 100 years of Board service, the Library Board is committed to building a new downtown landmark library for Calgary. What a fitting way to mark the 100th anniversary of Calgary’s first public library in 2012!
It’s Where Calgary Will Meet the WorldIn a global economy, our rapidly growing and increasingly diverse city drives the critical need for a larger and much different library. In recognition of customer demands on our expanding library system, the new Central Library will give all Calgarians access to the rich experiences they need to thrive in the 21st century. State-of-the art technology, world-calibre resources in multiple languages and media, and specialized programs and services will respond to individual needs and dreams.
A New Civic LandmarkOur goal is to create a Calgary landmark Central Library as the visible symbol of our community’s high regard for knowledge, ideas, and innovation. The new Central Library project is part of the comprehensive re-development in the downtown core which sets a high standard for urban and architectural design. Our plans are aligned with civic plans to build a safe inner-city community in the Rivers District. Also, the new Central Library is part of broader, international initiatives to showcase Calgary as a great, global city where people want to live, work and do business.
The Library Board has reviewed the experiences of public libraries around the world. Experience shows that a new Central Library is a powerful ‘people magnet’ and a catalyst for economic growth. New libraries in cities such as Seattle, Montreal and Minneapolis have generated dramatic increases in use, attracting visitors and tourists in record numbers. Economic growth and resiliency have proved to be significant returns on the public investment.
Imagine the FutureCalgary Public Library is a place of dreams and community aspirations. In this extraordinary place, Calgary’s memory is treasured and shared, and the future is imagined and built. A world of information and ideas is within reach of all Calgarians. We hope you share our excitement about a new Central Library. We encourage you to share your ideas, and show your support for this great vision.
