Calgary Public Library’s master plan includes new community facilities as well as a new Central Library. It is not a question of either – or. Both are needed.
Plans are already underway, and funds earmarked, for three new community branches and expanded facilities and customer spaces at two existing locations.
Map – Current and planned library locations
- New branches are planned for the NE, NW, and SE quadrants of the city in the communities of Taradale/Martindale, Symons Valley and Seton.
- The new NE branch will be built as part of the new Centre of Community with the YMCA and the NE Centre of Communities Society. Targeted opening date is 2011.
- This model – building libraries as part of a centre of community – reduces our environmental footprint and operating costs while increasing access and use. This same model is planned for Symons Valley and Seton.
- Signal Hill Library will undergo a 7,000 square foot expansion to be completed in late 2010 or early 2011. The expanded facility will include additional collection space, a teen zone and a seniors gathering place.
- A Community Literacy and Learning Centre, with specialized programs for adults and children, will be opened in a 4,000 square foot facility adjacent to Louise Riley Library in spring 2009. This move will make more space available for additional services within the branch.
