The new central library will contribute to the development of a strong, vibrant and informed community. It will meet or exceed the Silver Level Rating of the LEED® Rating System, in accordance with The City of Calgary's Sustainable Building Vision and Policy.

Calgary Public Library's guiding values include the environment and sustainable resource management, and the Library Board has articulated its commitment to environmental stewardship in its Environmental Policy:

  • The Calgary Public Library Board is committed to integrating sustainable social, economic, and environmental objectives into its strategic decision-making, planning, purchasing, maintenance, design and construction process, within available resources.
  • The Board will ensure its operations and everyday business activities are carried out in such a manner as to encourage sustainable resources management and minimize environmental impact.
  • All new facilities will adhere to LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) specifications. All renovations will endeavour, wherever possible, to reflect LEED® specifications.
  • The Board will demonstrate its commitment to this policy, by regularly reviewing processes and practices to encourage continuous improvement in this area.

Calgary Public Library has already demonstrated a remarkable commitment to the environment and sustainable resource management. It is the only library system in Canada with 2 LEED® certified facilities: Crowfoot Library, the first building in Calgary to be LEED® certified, and Country Hills Library at Cardel Place, the first building in Alberta to achieve LEED® Gold Rating.
