Calgary's new central library will set a standard for 21st century public libraries, creating a destination and community place for information, learning and culture.

In 2006:

Almost 650,000 visitors came to the Central Library, traveling 4 million kilometres to use the wealth of resources.

Of these visitors, 53% came by public transit, 40.5% walked or biked, and 6.5% drove.

While at the Central Library, visitors:
  • received answers to over 1.8 million questions
  • borrowed 930,000 books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and other items
  • consulted nearly 1 million books, magazines, CDs and other library resources
  • used the public computers over 150,000 times, and spent over 87,000 hours researching, e-mailing and other activities.
To support our role as a trusted, safe and vibrant community place, Central Library staff:
  • delivered signature service an average of 61 hours per week, open hours which exceeds any other public institution in Calgary.
  • planned and delivered programs that were enjoyed by over 13,000 participants
