Calgary is ready for a 21st century public building that makes a strong architectural statement, celebrates the spirit of the city, and contributes to the vitality of the downtown.

After careful consideration the Calgary Public Library Board has chosen to select the design team for a landmark central library through a limited international architecture competition. A design competition invites participation from architects locally, nationally and internationally. In the competition's two-phase approach, an initial call for expression of interest (EOI) will be issued to determine interest and to establish the qualifications of the applicants. From this, a short-list will be established. In the second phase, an independent jury will review the submissions of the short listed design firms and select the winning design team based on submission merits.

This approach helps ensure:

  • a dynamic, transparent selection process
  • creativity and innovative design
  • opportunities for community engagement, including public events
  • enhanced appreciation of the built environment through civic dialogue
  • exceptional project vitality
  • opportunities for participation by local, Canadian and international architects.

Professional Advisor, Odile Hénault, has been engaged to manage the architecture competition. Ms. Hénault, trained as an architect in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has had a multifaceted career during which she has worked as an architect, critic, editor, curator, teacher and professional advisor. We are confident her commitment and experience will help us select an architectural team that will help transform our hopes and dreams into reality for Calgary's new central library.

Competition conditions have been submitted and conditionally approved by the Alberta Association of Architects.
